Was originally used to create "The Citizen" newspaper when it was first published in 1985. Description provided from The Citizen: "While people in the industry spoke of 'pasting-up' the newspaper, no one used paste to assemble a newspaper by the late 1960s. Instead, type, illustrations, etc. were run through a waxer, which put a thin layer of wax on the back of the paper. This allowed the paper to be applied to the 'paste-up sheet' and fastened down with a quick push, but the paper could be picked up again and repositioned as needed (although if you moved it too much a new coating of wax was needed). When you were satisfied the item was in the right spot, you used a roller to make sure the bond was strong, then the page was ready to go. At a cost of $700, this waxer seemed like a big investment when The North Huron Citizen was started on a shoe-string in 1985 but it remained useful right up until the spring of 2007 when the classified pages, the last pages to be paginated completely on the computer, were switched to the computer." |
