Description |
Wine-coloured, letter-like covered sewing/needlework kit; finish is made to have grooves; rectangle shaped top and bottom with slanted sides from top to smaller bottom; lid opens in the centre with a pull tab on each section of the lid; handle of 2 intertwined looks fixed to long sides; inside is divided into 4 compartments, each lined in shiny red finish, largest section has a silver foil bottom; bottom of lid sections has a section for needles; backing is foil, similar leather-like envelope for needles with labels - RUG, CREWEL, DARNING, G.DOWNS, CHENILLE, and needle sizes - 20-22, 5/9, 5/9, 5/9, 2022 and on other side, sizes, 4/8, 6, 7, 8, 5/10. Needles were in thee sections a well as in the bottom of some of the other parts. String, embroidery thread and 4 spools of thread included. 2 very small white, 1 blue, 1 gold; small pattern piece of teacup and saucer for embroidery included. Notes |
Belonged to Matilda and Robert McKenzie, who owned a hardware store in Dungannon. They lived through the great fire in Dungannon but never rebuilt, and later moved to Wingham. The fire was April 1, 1937 and destroyed five buildings, including the hardware store. The Signal-Star reported on the fire on April 7, 1937 and it is referenced in the book "Once Upon a Time ... In Dungannon" on page 108. |
